Coherence (+) is an investigation of materials, processes and time. The work develops in layers, slow and repetitive, as the pencil explores the textured surface of the paper. Patterns that emerge from the sequence of marks and erasures suggest patterns that can be seen in the world, and patterns that are found when science explores beneath surfaces. The ambiguity of the image conjures the recurrence of patterns and forms across different scales, as we use different instruments and magnification to visualise and interpret the world.

Anne Chapman-Smith is an emerging visual artist based in Adelaide, working in drawing, expanded drawing and sculpture. Engaging with process, pattern, and repetition, Anne seeks to record something of her understanding of aspects of the material world that are captured by the augmented seeing of science. Anne completed a Bachelor of Visual Art at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2023, and draws on her previous work as a molecular biologist.
