Christian Lock’s practice expands the language of painting through a restless investigation of surface, gesture, and materiality. Working at the intersection of abstraction and assemblage, Lock’s compositions are built through complex layering—spray paint, resin, fabric, and sculptural accretions coalesce into works that hover between the pictorial and the object-like.
His process is intuitive yet rigorous, often involving the breaking down and rebuilding of the canvas surface. Through this, Lock constructs richly textured visual fields that reference colour-field painting, subcultural aesthetics, and the metaphysical legacy of early modernist abstraction. The result is work that is as sensorially charged as it is formally precise.
Based in Adelaide, Lock has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including the Cairo Biennale, and has held recent solo exhibitions at GAGPROJECTS. He is a recipient of the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship, and his work is held in the collections of Artbank and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
